Joe Aribo reveals secret Rangers role appointment as Steven Gerrard sends 'rule breaker' message

Joe Aribo plans to take the law into his own hands after boss Steven Gerrard urged him to become Rangers’ “rule breaker”.

The Light Blues operate to a strict tactical code but Aribo is flourishing having been given free rein to do as he likes in the final third.

The Nigeria playmaker is thriving under the guidance of former Liverpool skipper Gerrard and put on a powerhouse display during Thursday’s 2-0 win over Brondby.

He said: “The one thing the gaffer always says to me is that I’m one of the rule breakers in the team. He tells me to carry the ball up to defences and try to unlock them.

“Shooting and playing forward, trying to play killer passes - that’s what impacts games. Passing sideways doesn’t really affect the game. So many players can do that.

“It’s just being spiteful in the final third, being ruthless and taking any chance or opportunity that you can get.”

Gers have struggled to click into gear this season but there was signs of fluency returning to their play as they swept past the Danes to pick up their first Europa League points.

“It felt very good,” said Aribo. “We knew how important the result was. We needed it to kick-start our European campaign.

“So we just knew how important it was. Its was a really nice feeling being out there. It’s up there with one of the best performances this season. Hopefully we can just keep that going and push on from here.”

Having jump-started their European campaign, Gers will now look to get back up to top speed in the Premiership against St Mirren after allowing nearest challengers Hearts snatch a draw last weekend.

“It’s so important to bounce back,” said Aribo ahead of Sunday’s trip to Paisley. “We know we can’t afford to drop points. We want to win every single game.

“When we drop points it’s a bit frustrating and a bit dampening. We just need to make sure we get it right in the next fixture.”
