Joe Anderson slams UEFA and calls situation for LFC fans in Madrid 'disgraceful'

Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has slammed UEFA over the organisation's handling of the Champions League final in Madrid.

He said European football's governing body was 'disconnected from real people' over its ticket allocations for fans and its organisation of fan zones.

Mayor Anderson had written to his counterpart in Madrid, mayor Manuela Carmen, over the fact that fan zones in the city would close two hours before kick off at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium.

Fans who are travelling to Madrid but do not have tickets have complained there will be no ability to watch the match from within the fanzones.

But Mayor Anderson said despite further discussions with LFC chief executive Peter Moore, Mayor Carmen and UEFA, the fan zones will still shut two hours before kick off.

He said: “As always what we have done is simply the best we can do, the real issue is discrimination, as not enough tickets are allocated to the fans of the finalists, with the majority reserved for commercial partners and corporate hospitality packages.

“UEFA is so disconnected from real people and always has been.

“This disgraceful situation can and should be changed by the FA and Premier League coming together with other European League representatives to demand change."

Mayor Anderson said Madrid's mayor and the police were acting on UEFA advice in shutting the zones at 6pm.

He said LFC have paid money towards the fan zones and other costs for their fans in Madrid and called on European clubs to 'listen to their fans' and challenge UEFA on the situation.

Mayor Carmen's office has said there are more than 12,000 bars, restaurants and cafes in Madrid with screens where fans will be able to watch the match.

UEFA was contacted for comment.
