Joe Anderson slams companies 'flouting coronavirus rules'

Joe Anderson has slammed construction bosses for reportedly flouting coronavirus rules.

Mayor Joe shared his frustration on Twitter saying he was "absolutely appalled" on Wednesday evening to see a video which appears to show hundreds of construction workers in the canteen at once.

The video comes after company bosses stated that their priority was to "protect" their workers, slow the spread of the virus and maintain some level of operation.

Posting the video on his Twitter account, Joe said he was "absolutely appalled" to see the video.

He added: “Sort it or I will. These workers need protecting and go home to families."

The mayor also shared a link to the video showing countless workers eating their lunch in close contact with each other with no possible way to respect or carry out social distancing guidance.

Although the mayor singled out Laing O'Rourke in his tweet, the firm has since said that the video was not taken in its canteen.

A Laing O’Rourke spokesperson said: “Laing O’Rourke can confirm that is not the RLUH nor any of our sites and we will be contacting Mr Anderson to clarify.”

In a statement on Tuesday, Laing O'Rourke said it had introduced more hygiene measures at its sites and have made workers aware of the new government guidelines.

Mr Anderson also spoke out over concerns of staff at the Matalan warehouse in Kirkby after shocking images showed how workers were unable to social distance and bosses were "not following rules."

He said: "Matalan get this sorted or you will be forced to close down, you are clearly in breach of Site Operating Procedures on #COVID19.

"Your workforce and their families need to be treated safely. Trading Standards will be used to enforce."

After the image emerged, Matalan said it was "concerning" and that it is operating its warehouse "with a number of precautions in place" including regular breaks for handwashing.

The latest video comes after new guidance was issued to construction companies and workers that states building work can continue as long as those working on sites are able to maintain a two metre distance from eachother to stop further spread of coronavirus.
