Liverpool Mayor Joe Anderson has responded to news that a city council worker was arrested after a dramatic police raid at a city centre apartment last night.
A 50-year-old council staff member was arrested along with a 32-year-old man, with o fficers seen outside Beetham Plaza on The Strand , across the road from the Cunard Building, on Wednesday evening.
Matrix police vans were parked on Brunswick Street before Merseyside Police confirmed that two people were arrested for a range of fraud, bribery , corruption and misconduct offences.
A 32-year-old man, from Liverpool city centre, was arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud, bribery and corruption.
THe 50-year-old man, who police confirmed is employed by Liverpool City Council was also arrested on suspicion of conspiracy to defraud and misconduct in a public office.

A spokeswoman said: "The two men have been released on conditional bail."
Speaking this morning Mayor Joe Anderson said he and his council staff will co-operate fully with Merseyside Police as they carry out their investigation.
He told the ECHO: "We will co-operate with the police unequivocally and will assist them in any way that we can.
"If there is anything the police needs access to or help with then we will of course do that."
Mayor Anderson said it would be difficult to say any more at this stage because of the ongoing investigation.
