Joe Allen is expected to miss the start of Liverpool’s Premier League campaign after suffering a hamstring problem in Sunday’s pre-season friendly at Swindon Town.

The Wales international was replaced after 12 minutes at the County Ground after complaining of what the manager, Brendan Rodgers, described as a “tweaked” hamstring. Liverpool are awaiting the results of a scan on the injury but Allen is unlikely to be fit for Sunday’s opening game at Stoke City.

The injury represents an untimely setback for the 25-year-old as he challenges the summer signing James Milner and Emre Can, among others, for a place in Liverpool’s central midfield this season.

Wolverhampton Wanderers are favourites to sign Sheyi Ojo on a season-long loan from Liverpool. The 18-year-old forward, who scored his first senior goal for Rodgers’ team against Swindon, has attracted interest from several Championship clubs with Liverpool looking to continue his development with regular first team football away from Anfield. Talks between the two clubs over a loan deal continue.
