Jodie Whittaker's final Doctor Who episode air date as major villains return for deadly battle

The BBC has confirmed that Jodie Whittaker’s final Doctor Who episode will air on Sunday, October 23, 2022.

Not only is it Jodie's final outing, but showrunner Chris Chibnall will be stepping away from the series as Russell T Davies takes over for next year's centenary celebrations.

Titled The Power of the Doctor, this will be a feature length episode that will give Jodie's run an explosive send of which will see the return of major villains and beloved characters.

The episode is the last of three special which aired this year and will serve as a way to open the door for Ncuti Gatwa's run, who was confirmed to be taking over the role next year.

Not only is the date confirmed, but the BBC has also released the synopsis for the episode, one which will bring back three of the Doctor’s biggest enemies, the Daleks, Cybermen and the Master.

The synopsis reads: “Action-adventure in space and time for all the family, starring Jodie Whittaker, Mandip Gill, John Bishop, Sophie Aldred, Janet Fielding and Sacha Dhawan.

“In this feature-length Special to mark her last adventure, Jodie Whittaker’s Thirteenth Doctor must fight for her very existence, against her deadliest enemies: the Daleks, the Cybermen and her arch-nemesis, the Master.

“Who is attacking a speeding bullet train on the edges of a distant galaxy? Why are seismologists going missing from 21st century Earth? Who is defacing some of history’s most iconic paintings? Why is a Dalek trying to make contact with the Doctor? And just what hold does the mesmeric Rasputin have over Tsar Nicholas in 1916 Russia?

“The Doctor faces multiple threats…and a battle to the death.”

Following Jodie’s departure from the role, Ncuti Gatwa will be stepping into her shoes as the Fourteenth Doctor.

The Sex Education star will be joined by David Tennent in his debut episode which will be coming as part of centenary celebrations.

Little is known about the episode, though David’s return as the Tenth Doctor comes with Catherine Tate also reprising her role as his former companion Donna Noble.

The release date for this episode has not been confirmed, though it will likely happen in November 2023, which is the month of the show's original debut six decades ago.

Speculation continues to rise regarding it, but Jodie's final outing will likely lay the groundwork for what is to come.
