Jodie Turner-Smith seen for first time as Anne Boleyn in ground-breaking thriller

Jodie Turner-Smith has been seen for the first time in costume as Anne Boleyn.

The British actress plays the second wife of Henry VIII in a three-part psychological thriller, which seeks to "shine a feminist light" on the Tudor Queen's story.

The 34-year-old will star as Boleyn in the Channel 5 drama, which is told from the queen's point of view and focuses on her final months before she was beheaded by Henry in 1536 for failing to produce a male heir.

Jodie was seen on set for the first time in Yorkshire this week, wearing a warm coat over a period costume.

She wore her hair pinned back beneath a black headpiece attached to a white veil.

The mother-of-one - she welcomed a daughter with actor husband Joshua Jackson earlier this year - was pictured outside a church with her co-stars, some of whom wore protective masks between scenes on the cold December day.

White House Farm star Amanda Burton was also seen on set. White Lines’ Barry Ward, Trigonometry’s Thalissa Teixeira, Hamilton musical star Jamael Westman and I May Destroy You star Paapa Essiedu also appear in the series.

On landing the lead role as the mother of the future Queen Elizabeth I, Queen & Slim star Jodie said in a statement: "I am so excited to join these exciting filmmakers in bringing the story of one of history's most controversial queens to the screen.

"Delving deeper into Anne Boleyn’s immense strengths while examining her fatal weaknesses and vulnerabilities, [writer Eve Hedderwick Turner's] scripts immediately captured my imagination.

"In the hands of Lynsey Miller, the legend of this formidable queen and fierce mother will be seen as a deeply human story that is still so relevant for today. I look forward to bringing my heart and spirit into this daring retelling of the fall of this iconic woman."

In casting Jodie, who is black, as the white Boleyn, producers Fable Pictures said the drama would challenge "all the conventions of who we think Anne Boleyn was and shine a feminist light on her story."

In a statement, Channel 5 said the drama would focus on Boleyn's attempts to "challenge the powerful patriarchy closing in around her."

They said: "The psychological drama follows her as she struggles to survive, to secure a future for her daughter."
