Jodie Meeks undergoes surgery on his right foot

One of the Orlando Magic's offseason acquisitions may not be able to contribute as early in the season ahead as team officials had originally hoped.

Shooting guard Jodie Meeks underwent surgery Tuesday morning to further stabilize the fifth metatarsal in his right foot _ the same bone he fractured in the Detroit Pistons' second game last season.

Magic officials said Meeks will be out "indefinitely" and his return will "depend on how he responds to rehabilitation."

The Magic acquired Meeks in a trade on June 29, sending the least favorable of their two second-round picks in 2019 to the Pistons.

Meeks, 28, passed a subsequent physical.

Magic officials coveted him because of his 3-point shooting ability and his veteran presence. His contract also was a relative bargain because only one season remains on the deal at a cost of $6.5 million.

Meeks also was supposed to solidify the team's depth on the wings behind swingmen Evan Fournier and Mario Hezonja, shooting guard C.J. Wilcox and combo forwards Aaron Gordon and Jeff Green.

Last season, Meeks underwent surgery to repair the fracture in his right foot and appeared in the Pistons' regular-season finale and in one of the Pistons' playoff games.

The Magic have experience with setbacks similar to Meeks' setback.

Glen Davis suffered a fracture in his left foot's fifth metatarsal during the 2012-13 season and underwent surgery.

Davis required another procedure in July 2013 in which he received a bone graft and had a larger screw inserted. Davis returned to play in late November of that year.

The extent of Meeks' second procedure is unclear.
