Killing Eve star Jodie Comer said she “couldn’t be prouder” of her friend and new world champion Katarina Johnson-Thompson.

Johnson-Thompson, 26, took heptathlon gold at the World Championships in Doha yesterday, breaking Jessica Ennis’ British record.

Comer, also 26, shared a photo of the athlete celebrating her victory on Instagram, adding a heartfelt message of congratulations for her friend.

“World champion right there!!!!!!!” she wrote. “We couldn’t be prouder of you Johnson-Thompson.

“Your hard work and dedication shows no limits. Soak it all up. You’re the best… it’s actually official (always has been)! X,” she continued, adding a crown emoji.

The pair both attended St Julie’s Catholic High School in Liverpool.

The actress recently won an Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actress in a Drama in recognition of her performance as psychopathic assassin Villanelle in Killing Eve.

Comer was visibly shocked when she won a best actress Emmy for her role as psychopathic assassin Villanelle in Phoebe Waller-Bridge’s Killing Eve last month.

In her speech, she admitted that she did not invite her parents to the awards ceremony because she did not think she would win.

“My mum and dad who are in Liverpool, who I didn’t invite because I didn’t think this was going to be my time,” she said. “One, I’m sorry. Two, I love you and I’m going to bring it home.”

Johnson-Thompson also congratulated her friend after her BAFTA win earlier this year, writing on Twitter: “Unbelievably proud of Jodie Comer. So b***** talented and getting the recognition you deserve!!”

Discussing their friendship in an interview with the Daily Mail shortly afterwards, Johnson-Thompson said: “It’s amazing, She’s just brilliant. We were in the same form from Year 7 onwards and we’re still on the group chat on our phones [...] and we catch up when we can.

“She was always talented, doing her accents or whatever. People probably saw her speech when she got the BAFTA and heard her Scouse accent and didn’t know what to think.

“She has been doing so well and I am just happy everyone gets to see it. She totally deserves it.”
