Jockey Lee Newman returns to race-riding after breaking his neck

Jockey Lee Newman has made an incredible return to race-riding after breaking his neck.

The former UK champion apprentice broke two vertebrae in his back and one in his neck in January 2018.

Newman, 37, rode Disco Riffic to finish sixth in a 6f handicap at Pinjarra Park in Australia on Wednesday morning, Irish time.

It was the same venue where he suffered the fall that led to his injuries almost a year and a half ago.

The Scot was given the all clear to return to racing after riding in a barrier trial on Monday.

Newman won the apprentices’ title when riding for Richard Hannon snr in 2000.
