Jockey Josh Moore in critical care after complications from "serious chest infection"

Josh Moore is in critical care in hospital as a result of complications from a "serious chest infection."

The rider has received treatment from medics since he suffered a fall at Haydock five days ago. Moore was injured when his mount, Gleno, fell and collided with him at the sixth fence of a veterans' chase. The top sportsman broke his leg and had an operation at Aintree University Hospital.

On Wednesday, the Injured Jockeys' Fund released a statement, which said: "Following his fall at Haydock on Saturday, jockey Josh Moore is in critical care at Aintree University Hospital. After successful surgery to his femur, his recovery has been made complicated by a serious chest infection which has required him to stay sedated on the ventilator and has delayed definitive treatment of his injuries.

"The specialist medical team are working hard to treat Josh, and his family remain by his bedside.”

In the accident, Moore also broke several ribs, punctured a lung and damaged his lower back. His sister Hayley told Sky Sports Racing earlier this week that her brother was injured when Gleno fell on top of him as he came down.

Earlier this season, Moore rode Botox Has to a memorable success in the Grade 2 National Spirit Hurdle at the family's local track Fontwell. The horse is trained by his father Gary, a former jockey, at stables in Sussex.

Moore recorded his best campaign in the saddle in 2020-21, riding 40 winners. He also struck at Aintree's Grand National meeting on Editeur Du Gite.

Racing industry professionals including presenter Matt Chapman have sent wellwishes to Moore and family. Quoting the IJF update, Chapman said: "Really worrying latest news about Josh Moore. Literally everything crossed for an incredible guy and dad."

Fans of the sport posted on social media, with one writing: "Awful news regarding Josh Moore, I wish him and his family all the best in this tough time." Another added: "Praying for Joshua Moore and all his family at this time #keep strong."
