Jockey Gavin Ryan taken to hospital after fall in Dundalk race declared void

Apprentice jockey Gavin Ryan has been taken to hospital for precautionary X-rays following a fall at Dundalk.

The 5lb claimer came off Guild in the early stages of the Crowne Plaza Dundalk Race & Stay Handicap, a race scheduled for 4pm.

The race was declared void around two furlongs out while Ryan received treatment on the track.

He was taken to hospital for checks.

Dr Antonia Lehane said in an update from the venue: "Gavin Ryan is fully conscious and talking.

"He is going to Drogheda Hospital for precautionary X-rays."

Ryan had earlier ridden a winner on the day's only surviving card, when he drove Reverberation (7/2f) home to prevail by a short-head.

The young rider was dislodged from the five-year-old gelding after the line, but managed to keep hold of the reins to stop him from galloping away.

Ryan enjoyed a breakthrough year in 2019 with 23 winners.
