Jockey delights punters as well-backed horse overtakes 200-1 shot with storming late run

A jockey delighted punters by producing a storming late run on a well-backed horse.

Jim Crowley had second favourite Twistaline positioned well off the pace in a mile event at Lingfield on Tuesday.

The filly, without a win in her previous 11 career outings, took a keen hold behind rivals.

On her first start for the Value Racing Club and trainer Mick Appleby, the three-year-old was going well as the leaders pressed on.

Still almost last on the home turn though, she appeared to have plenty to do if her backers were going to get a return on the 7-2 starting price.

Crowley chose to switch his mount around several opponents, but she was still around six lengths down at the furlong pole.

Rank outsider The Ormer Gatherer, sent off at 200-1 in the betting, hit the front as the runners bunched up.

Twistaline's momentum carried her past however and she hit the front before the line, actually winning a shade cosily.

Racing fans took to social media to praise Crowley for his fine effort in the saddle.

"Jim Crowley is a master horseman. Just an all-round excellent jockey. Perfect ride on Twistaline finishing fast and late," one wrote on Twitter.

A second person added: "That’s a heck of a ride by Jim Crowley. Twistaline comes home strongest."

It was an immediate return for connections, who picked Twistaline up for around £7,000 from the Tattersalls horse sales in October.

The first prize was £2,970 and Appleby has the option of running her again quickly as she holds an entry at Kempton on Saturday.

Following the race, the stewards held an enquiry into interference, which did not involve the winner.

The stewards considered that it had improved The Ormer Gatherer's placing (second) after contact was made with rival Homemade Andrea (third).

The places were switched around and George Downing, the jockey on The Ormer Gatherer, received a four day ban for careless riding.

Crowley's win came little over a week after another sportsman contributed to a shock result in Ireland.

James Conheady got the fractions spot on teaming up with An Forghas, 999-1 during a bumper contest.
