Jockey banned for riding offence against former Royal Ascot winner making hurdles debut

A jockey was banned for 'improper riding' against a former Royal Ascot winner racing over hurdles for the first time.

Stewards at Pakenham on Sunday felt Will Gordon was at fault for 'turning his mount's head in and rode in onto Sir Isaac Newton which had established clear running to his inside.'

Sir Isaac Newton won the 2016 Wolferton Handicap for Aidan O'Brien and Ryan Moore and was making his debut over obstacles for the Maher-Eustace stable.

In the incident, the eight-year-old was tightened onto the left wing of the hurdle approaching the 1200-metre mark.

His rider Steven Pateman contacted the wing of the obstacle with his left foot.

Sir Isaac Newton finished third in the maiden hurdle, which began with starting stalls.

The son of Galileo travelled well into the 3200m contest and was produced to lead at the penultimate flight, but he reached for the final obstacle and had no more to give.

The winner Riding High, purchased from New Zealand for a career over jumps, showed a smart change of pace in the closing stages to overtake his three rivals.

Gordon, who pleaded not guilty to the riding offence, was suspended until May 21.
