A mechanical design engineer role from FreshMinds
When I was writing this feature this morning, not long after breakfast, this job ad soon got me dreaming about lunch. It's a role with a food industry start-up - founded by seven friends - with the aim of keeping peckish office workers' cravings (like mine) at bay. The company is after an engineering graduate armed with loads of ideas about how to help make things run faster and better, so it sounds like an opportunity to make an impact from day one. You'll be working alongside one of the founders of the company so, if you can see yourself eventually launching the next Innocent-style funky brand, perhaps it's a good chance to learn from those in the know about entrepreneurial start-ups.

Ah, trains. They've been my second home since I began a 200-mile round trip commute to work three years ago. It feels like I know every nook and cranny of every train carriage and I'm word perfect on the announcements by now. You'll be getting to grips with far more in-depth knowledge about the railways in this role though, which is from a niche consultancy which works predominantly with public and private rail industry organisations. According to the job spec "the team endeavour to instill its new recruit with incredibly valuable, highly sought after skills which combine systems engineering knowledge with economics to identify the best solutions." Oh, and you'll get a chance work on improving public transport, which will endear you massively to commuters like me.
It's a graduate project engineer from Online Resourcing at 8
Glasgow. It's the new Edinburgh, or at least it's in the running according to The Rough Guide, which includes Glasgow in its list of international cities that 'should be' the capital. It's also home to this role which is billed as ideally suiting a graduate who would like to develop in a manufacturing engineering environment, and you'll be working for a company which manufactures and maintains gas generators for the laboratory market. Again, engineering graduates are being sought, as well as people with a HND in the subject.
City University London wants a lecturer in electrical power systems
A chance here to inspire future generations of engineers in this teaching post at City University London. Engineering is one of the uni's strengths as well, according to the ad. We've had a little peek at the job details on City's website and a little tip for you - applications from candidates with experience in relevant experimental research are particularly welcome.
A senior engineering adviser from Sojitz Europe
Ah, language skills. So important in a global market place. But what language to learn? In this role the ability to speak Japanese is a must. It certainly sounds like a role that'll suit somebody with an interest in all things international, as you'll be tasked with promoting lithium ion battery manufacturing technology and processes to the European market.
A place on the nucleargraduates programme via Step
For graduates it can be tough to find work when you've only had one job, or a handful of work experience placements. Nab a place on this graduate scheme though and you'll get a chance to network with the 20-plus organisations involved, and apparently it's likely you'll be made an offer by one or more of them once the programme has ended. Not bad, eh? Back to the two-year grad scheme itself. It's run by the Nuclear Decommissioning Authority, Rolls-Royce, Sellafield Ltd and Magnox as well as other industry stakeholders. There's three structured UK secondments and there's also a chance to leave these shores behind, as half of graduates get to go on complete a secondment abroad in places such as the United States, France or Japan.
Step is searching for a graduate project engineer
Well, this role sounds a little Bond-esque as it's from a company which "aims to innovate and develop technologies to improve the effectiveness and protection of military and security services". Joking aside though, this is an area you'll become an expert in, it seems, and you'll be enrolled on a workplace training programme with the eventual aim of becoming a self-sufficient specialist in this area of technology within three to five years. Perhaps not surprisingly, you must observe strict confidentiality at all times in this role and again, foreign language skills would be helpful.
An applications electrical engineer role from Recruitmentrevolution.com
Over to the spires of Oxford for this job. The full title is 'applications electrical engineer - design, wiring, panel building', so it seems like you'll have a lot to get your teeth into. Some of the things you'll be involved in include helping deliver specific projects on-time and to budget, developing project plans and liaising with customers in moving projects forward and providing post-sales support.
Imperial College London is after a corporate partnerships associate for engineering
Another well-known London university is after staff. This time it's not a teaching role - they want somebody to "stimulate and support the development of strategic research collaborations between business and the faculty of engineering". There's going to be an emphasis on green aviation, so a working knowledge of the engineering challenges in aerospace and aviation industries will help you stand out.
And this week's numero uno is an assistant manager for research programmes at The Royal Academy of Engineering
Let's play a word association game. Research?...funding. Those who know research know how important raising funds can be. And in this role you'll be involved in assessing applications for this type of funding, by handling enquiries, assessing applications through peer review, arranging interviews and finalising the contracts. You'll also monitor the performance of awardees, so it sounds like a good chance to be involved in cutting edge research from beginning to end … hence it's position at the top of the chart.
