Jobs to go at Nevis Range as outdoor sports centre gets ready to open

Nevis Range outdoor sports centre says it will have to make some staff redundant as it prepares to reopen next month with extra safety measures in place.

The snowsports, mountain biking and outdoor activities facility will only be able to open five days a week, from Wednesday to Sunday plus bank holidays, due to the financial impact of coronavirus.

It plans to reopen on 15 July, the provisional date given for tourism and hospitality-related businesses to resume operation. The centre could not confirm how many jobs will go.

Chief executive Chris O’Brien said: “Very sadly there will be some redundancies at Nevis Range as we try to return to a sound financial footing in order to keep delivering quality outdoor activities and events for all of our customers all year round.

“Despite all of the challenges and tough decisions we are having to make as a direct result of the Covid-19 pandemic, there is still a mood of cautious optimism amongst the team. Whilst many of our projects have been cancelled due to funding pressures and a catastrophic loss of revenue, we are continuing with our Blue Bike Track, a new blue graded, uplift accessible, trail and hope to have that open in May 2021.”

The Mountain Gondola will be restricted to two people at a time, unless they in a larger group that travelled together. Users will be asked to wear masks. The venue will be employing extra cleaning, thermal scanning for Covid-19 symptoms and physical distancing.
