Technology: The outgoing chief executive of Google, Eric Schmidt, has announced a plan to hire more than 1,000 staff over the coming year to boost its European operation, reports the Guardian. He told the DLD tech conference in Germany that the new recruits would be roughly split equally between technology and sales staff. A spokesperson for Google told Siliconrepublic.com the new jobs will be spread across the entire European region, where Google already employs 5,000 people.
Teaching: A new language school opening in the centre of Bristol will create 45 new jobs. The EC English Language Centre needs a mixture of teachers and administration staff over the next two years as the college expands, according to This is Bristol. The new language school in Queen Square is due to open next month.
Green energy: Up to 300 new jobs could be created in Scotland after a Spanish energy company revealed plans to invest in two projects. Wind turbine manufacturer Gamesa wants to establish an offshore wind technology centre in Glasgow. Dundee could also benefit from plans to establish a manufacturing and maintenance base in the city, reports the Press Association.
Insurance: Insurance company Hastings Direct will create 150 new posts by this summer, reports Recruiter. The firm says the first 60 posts will be recruited this month, with the remaining 90 new roles expected to be filled by summer. A recruitment open day will be held on January 29 between 9am and 1pm at the company's office in Collington Avenue, Bexhill.
Call centre: A property firm is creating up to 100 jobs in Southampton. LSL Property Services, the company behind high street brands such as Your Move and Reeds Rains, needs dozens of staff to fill vacancies at a new £2m call centre in the city, reports the Southern Daily Echo.
