Jobs reprieve for EK staff as Thomas Cook announce closure of 21 stores

Staff at the two Thomas Cook stores in East Kilbride have been given a stay of execution following the closure of 21 stores.

The travel giants announced the closures last week, resulting in the loss of more than 300 jobs UK-wide.

Staff at the Princes Mall and Plaza stores breathed a sigh of relief as they were told their stores would not be closed following the company’s restructuring.

However, Thomas Cook confirmed they were planning to cut a further 218 jobs “following a review of the retail workforce”.

Over 100 customer-facing roles were axed last week as a result of the store closures, citing holidaymakers turning to online to book holidays.

Thomas Cook said 64 per cent of all its bookings in the UK were made online last year.

Company chief Will Waggott said: “Today’s announcement reflects the wider challenges seen on the High Street, with more and more customers choosing to book online.”

It follows a hit to the company’s profits – forecast in September – as a result in the summer heatwave, which saw many holidaymakers embark on a staycation.

A second profit warning was issued in November, when the travel firm said winter bookings were also down. The shop closures will take the number of Thomas Cook outlets down to 566.

Store closures were part of plans to “streamline” the business.

Just two Scottish stores were closed – Aberdeen Langstane and Kirkintilloch Cowgate – with the majority of stores being closed said to be “not profitable”.
