Jobs created as angling retailer opens new Nottinghamshire branch

Fishing tackle and equipment giant Angling Direct has created new jobs after opening a showroom in Daybrook.

Rods, lines and reels will be available at the company's 4,500 sq ft venue in Mansfield Road, which had been occupied by Majestic Wines until January this year.

The move forms part of Angling Direct's plan to grow its physical footprint throughout 2019 and Nottinghamshire was deemed an ideal location due to its popularity among anglers.

The store itself will cater for a range of different fishing disciplines and it has created eight new positions, five of which are full time.

Angling Direct's Chief Executive Officer, Darren Bailey, said: "We are very excited to have opened our Nottingham store, which is set in a very popular angling area near the river Trent. The location also offers a good number of local lakes which all cover a broad range of fishing disciplines.

Majestic Wine set to rebrand putting Notttingham store at risk of closure

“As we seek to cater for all anglers across the UK with a new and modern retail offering, we will continue to strategically expand our physical geographical footprint, as well as enhance our online offering in terms of products, experience and education in order to help raise the profile of angling."

Angling Direct reported sales growth across its stores and e-commerce at the start of this year, with overall sales in February and March up by 28.5 percent compared to last year. Further stores are also planned this year.

Mr Bailey added: "Whilst other areas of the retail sector may be experiencing difficulties, we are delighted that our strategic focus on customer experience and service, as well as positioning our stores in the correct locations, is driving our growth and brand value. We look forward to updating the market on our further progress in due course."

Majestic Wines closed its Daybrook store in January. The company decided to close the branch as the lease had come to an end, and consolidated its operations at its Castle Boulevard shop.

The company, which has 200 stores nationwide, confirmed last month it would be shutting branches as part of a rebranding move. It will be renamed Naked Wines after Majestic took over the online retailer in 2015.

More details are expected to be released in June as part of the group's "transformation plan".

Chief executive Rowan Gormley said: "It is clear that Naked Wines has the potential for strong sustainable growth, and we will deliver the best results for our shareholders, customers, people and suppliers by focusing all our energies on delivering that potential."
