Jobs at risk at pub chain Mitchells & Butler

Pub group Mitchells & Butler is putting jobs at risk after entering a consultation period with staff.

The group owns and manages a number of well known brands, including Toby Carvery, Harvester, and All Bar One.

The company has begun a redundancy process but it is unclear how many jobs are being put at risk.

Mitchells & Butler is listed on the London Stock Exchange and owns around 1,700 pubs and restaurants across the UK. It employs around 44,000 people.

A spokesman has called on the Government to provide more support to pubs and restaurants during the coronavirus crisis.

Speaking to the BBC, they said: "Our industry is operating in exceptionally challenging and uncertain circumstances.

"With trading restrictions and uncertainty likely to continue for the foreseeable future, we strongly urge the Government to step up the level of support it is offering to an industry which has been repeatedly singled out and taken the full brunt of restrictions."

Yesterday Boris Johnson's Government announced new rules to manage the pandemic, which involved pubs in some parts of the country being forced to close. Meanwhile all other pubs will continue to operate under the 10pm curfew.

People are also being told not to meet in groups of more than six outside and are still banned from mixing indoors, including in pubs.
