Jobs at risk after Asda takes decision to close Kilmarnock supermarket cafe

Jobs are under threat after Asda took the decision to close their in-store café.

The eaterie at the Kilmarnock store — which employs six workers — is expected to close this weekend.

Staff at the Queen's Drive supermarket café are not directly employed by Asda and are contracted by a firm called Instore.

Instore have said today that redeployment for 'several' workers has been secured.

Asda bosses say they took the decision to close the café in response to an increase in online shopping orders.

A spokesman for Asda said: "Throughout the pandemic our customers’ shopping habits have changed and the demand for online groceries has increased significantly.

"To help adapt to this we have made changes to our Kilmarnock store by removing the café and adding in extra space for online groceries.

"We have worked closely with Instore throughout this process to look for ways we can redeploy their colleagues."

An Instore spokeswoman added: “Following Asda’s decision to close the café in the Kilmarnock store, we have been in consultation with colleagues on site.

"We appreciate this is a difficult time for employees and have worked closely with Asda to identify redeployment opportunities elsewhere in the business, which have been secured for several members of the team.

"We are providing ongoing support to the remaining colleagues.”
