Jobless man stole £50 worth of booze from B&M Bargains to sell on so he could buy food

A repair man has pledged to stop shoplifting after stealing £50 of alcohol while out of work.

City magistrates gave Simon Farmer a £325 bill for the theft from the Clifton branch of B&M Bargains.

Lauren Fisher, mitigating, told the court he was out-of-work and sold the liquor so he could buy food.

"It was a one-off, a blip. He was suffering financially and that is no longer the case.

"He admitted the offence immediately. He made no attempt to procrastinate," said Miss Fisher. She told the court Farmer now has a job renovating property.

A £160 fine was ordered for Farmer, of Southchurch Drive, Clifton. He admitted theft on January 11 and must pay £85 prosecution costs, a £30 government surcharge as well as paying £50 compensation to the shop.

Michael Gallacher, prosecuting, said Farmer, 32, managed to get away with the alcohol, which was not recovered.

"The next time he went in, he was recognised and detained," added Mr Gallacher.

Farmer agreed to pay the court bill at a rate of £15 weekly. The magistrates said the sentence was reduced because he promptly pleaded guilty.
