Jobless man, 28, murdered own mum and ate her after chopping her up into tiny pieces

A jobless man has been convicted of murdering and eating his mum "bit by bit" after cutting her into tiny pieces.

Alberto Sanchez Gomez, 28, strangled Maria Soledad Gomez, 68, at their home in Madrid after a row - before dismembering her body.

He then ate parts of her corpse with his pet dog while storing remains in the fridge and bones in drawers, a court heard.

Gomez - dubbed 'the cannibal killer of Ventas', the area he lived in - had claimed he was suffering a "psychotic episode".

But jurors saw through his lies and convicted him of homicide and desecration of a human corpse following a two-week trial.

Prosecutors demanded a 15-year, five-month prison sentence for the wayward drug user before the verdict on Wednesday.

The trial judge at Madrid's Audencia Provincial court will make a ruling on a jail sentence in the coming days.

Sanchez Gomez told police who arrested him in February 2019 that he had been eating his mum “bit by bit” with his pet dog.

Detectives found parts of her remains in Tupperware containers in their fridge and bones in drawers around the family home.

Her head, hands and heart were found on her bed at the apartment near the Spanish capital’s famous Las Ventas bullring.

Local reports at the time said her body had been cut up into more than 1,000 tiny pieces.

Sanchez Gomez, a former waiter, is said have replied: “Yes, my mother is in here, dead” when police asked after the OAP.

The alarm was raised by a worried friend of Soledad’s who told the authorities she hadn’t seen her for a month.

A prosecution indictment submitted to the court ahead of the trial said the cannibal killer used a carpenter’s saw and two kitchen knives to cut up his mum’s body.

Sanchez Gomez, whose dad died when he was 15, claimed in court he had heard “hidden messages” when he watched TV and voices telling him: “Kill your mum.”

He told jurors that the voices were those of neighbours, acquaintances and celebrities.

But he insisted he didn’t remember cutting up his mum or eating her remains as he told police when they went to the murder scene.

During a last address to the court last Friday he insisted: “I’m very repentant. I suffer anxiety from the moment I wake up.

“I think of my mum and I’m absolutely heartbroken.”

Jurors heard the convicted killer, who regularly consumed drugs and alcohol, had been arrested 12 times for mistreating his mum before the grisly outcome of their last row and breached restraining orders several times.

A police officer who gave evidence during the trial said: “He began to tell us as he was being transferred to a police station the he had strangled her from behind.

“He also said he had eaten parts of her body, some cooked and some raw, and had given some pieces to the dog.”
