Job vacancies on the rise through September to November

Job vacancies continued to rise between September and November, figures released by the ONS show.

The number of job vacancies is now 434,500 above pre-pandemic levels.

The number of part-time workers in the three months to October also shot up, largely due to demand from the retail sector.

The unemployment rate among 16- to 24-year-olds was also back to its pre-pandemic levels at 11.3%.

There were also 1.22 million new job vacancies between September and November.

The ONS also said that the ending of the furlough support scheme in October did not lead to a significant rise in unemployment.

Despite this, between October and November there was a fractional increase in unemployment by 0.3 per cent.

Rob Clarry, an economist at PwC UK said that it was too early to say how the Omicron variant would impact the jobs market.

“We expect it to hit consumer demand for contact-intensive sectors, such as food and hospitality, over the near term. This could reduce demand for labour in these sectors over the coming months,” he said.

The figures released by the ONS relate to data gathered before the Omicron variant was detected in the UK.

The unemployment rate now stands at 4.2%,
