KANCHANABURI: Thirteen Myanmar job seekers were arrested for illegal entry after they crossed the border into Thailand in Muang district on Monday.

About 1.30pm a patrol from the Lat Ya Task Force, accompanied by chiefs of Moo 7 and 14 villages in tambon Ban Kao, entered forest near the Chong Khao Neep checkpoint where illegal border crossers were reported to be in hiding.

They found a large group of people. As the soldiers moved in to arrest them, the migrants fled in every direction. Only 13, seven men and six women, were rounded up.

The 13 said they came in a group of 22 from Yangon and Mawlumyine townships in Myanmar. The other nine had managed to escape.

They said they had each paid 20,000 baht to job agents for employment in Samut Sakhon.

The migrants were handed over to local police for legal proceedings, pending deportation.
