Job role to help keep Whitley Bay clean and tidy for someone who doesn't mind 'getting hands dirty'

A job vacancy has been announced looking for someone to help keep a town spick and span.

The role, advertised by the charity Whitley Bay Big Local, will involve keeping the town clean and green.

The "tidy town worker" will carry out a number of activities including litter picks, reporting vandalism and graffiti, painting, cleaning up, and doing small-scale repairs.

It will be a 12-month fixed term contract, paying £11 per hour, for work up to 16 hours per week.

The job's start date is expected to be around April 1.

The advert says: "Whitley Bay Big Local is looking for someone with a passion for the local environment and making our town cleaner and greener.

"Someone that doesn't mind getting their hands dirty and tackling lots of different tasks.

"As our Tidy Town Worker, you will work with residents, community groups, businesses and partners such as North Tyneside Council to make Whitley Bay an even better place to live.

"Highly motivated, you’ll be pro-active in seeking solutions to local environmental issues, like working outdoors, have practical skills with a ‘hands-on’ approach to getting things done.

"Working alongside our dedicated people, trustees and volunteers you will be based at our building on Whitley Road but will spend most of your time out and about in the neighbourhood.

"As a public face of Big Local you will have good communication skills, as well as practical experience in things like DIY, painting and gardening.

"This is an important role: not only will you be responsible for solving issues yourself and being a key point of contact between Big Local and partners such as the council, police, and local wardens, but you will be working to help build civic pride and encouraging people to take more responsibility for their local area."

The job will also include:

  • talking to residents, businesses and community groups about what needs to be done in the area to make it cleaner and greener.
  • weeding
  • maintaining planters and caring for other green spaces in the town
  • conducting monthly reports on the condition of the environment on a street-by-street basis, fixing issues as they arise and reporting others to the council.
