Joaquin Phoenix grabs shopping bag as he sprints through New York as the Joker

Joaquin Phoenix got up to no good as he sprinted through New York on a late night shoot for upcoming film Joker.

The actor, who plays the sadistic villain, was spotted in full clown face make-up as he ran with a shopping bag in hand.

He was also pictured wrapped up in an over-sized red coat as he battled the cold in between takes.

The images come hours after he was filmed sprinting down a busy New York street while shooting a police chase.

The actor was sporting the character’s signature green hair and wearing a red suit before a stuntman jumped in to get struck by a moving car.

Todd Phillips’ standalone film will tell the story of the Joker, real name Arthur Fleck, imagined as a failed 1980’s comedian who turns to “crime and chaos” in Gotham.

Produced by Hollywood star Martin Scorsese, the film also stars Robert De Niro, Zazie Beetz, Frances Conroy and Marc Maron.

Phoenix joins a host of actors who have taken on Batman’s nemesis, including Jack Nicholson in 1989’s Batman and Heath Ledger in 2008’s The Dark Knight, for which he won a posthumous Oscar.

Most recently, Jared Leto held the role in 2016 film Suicide Squad.

Joker is slated for release on October 4, 2019
