Joao Moutinho explains how Ralf Rangnick failed in changing Manchester United game plan

Wolves' Joao Moutinho has explained that Ralf Rangnick changed Manchester United's formation in-game to copy Wolves.

United welcomed Wolves to Old Trafford on Monday night for their first game of 2022, but the visitors started brightly while the Reds failed to get going in the opening stages. The tone was then set and United looked inferior as Wolves created multiple chances.

Wolves continued to place United under pressure and they deservedly broke the deadlock late on through Moutinho.

United couldn't find a response to that goal and Ralf Rangnick was condemned to losing his first game as interim boss. Moutinho reflected on Wolves' win after the match and he opened up on Rangnick's plan to adapt to his side's own formation.

Rangnick changed to play three centre-backs during the game, but Wolves still looked in control despite the tactical tweak.

"What I want is to help the team. Winning here at Old Trafford against a big team is amazing for us," Moutinho told SkySports.

"We came here to play football, play with the ball, that's what we do. We created a lot of shots in the first half. They changed a little bit to three centre-backs like us. We controlled everything. We only let them create one opportunity on the bar.

"We deserved it because of what we did over 90 minutes. I hope we can continue with this performance.

"Phil Jones headed out the ball. I tried to see where it went. [After] my first touch I said I need to shoot. That's what I need to do, to shoot more. A beautiful goal."

United will play Aston Villa next in the FA Cup on Monday, January 10.
