Joao Felix: Man United warned by Benfica over £105m transfer release clause

Manchester United will not be allowed to sign Joao Felix on the cheap, with Benfica insisting that the 19-year-old's £105million release clause must be met.

Standard Sport understands that Felix is a top target for United as Ole Gunnar Solskjaer rebuilds his squad this summer.

Felix scored 15 goals and set up another nine as Benfica won the Portuguese title this season, earning a call-up to the Portugal national squad along with the inevitable comparisons to Cristiano Ronaldo.

Manchester City are known admirers but Felix's value has put off the Premier League champions, meaning United should have a clear run at the playmaker - providing Real Madrid do not get involved.

But with United prepared to spend big to revamp Solskjaer's team for the 2019-20 season, Benfica's executive manager Domingos Soares de Oliveira is prepared to play hardball regarding the fee.

Oliveira insists that even a €100m (£88m) bid would not be enough for Benfica to sell, and that Felix's release clause is there for a reason.

"The goal is to keep the squad," he told TVI24. "If someone hits €100m (£88m) for Felix, the intention is not to sell.

"€100m is a lot of money, there has never been a player sold for that amount in Portugal, but the goal is to win on the pitch and we will do everything in that direction.

"Today, if they do not beat the €120m (£105m), the player stays."
