Joao Felix ignored advice to join Man City instead of Atletico Madrid in the summer

A former coach of Portugal wonderkid Joao Felix has revealed the youngster turned down his advice to join Manchester City rather than Atletico Madrid in the summer.

Felix rose to prominence in his homeland with Benfica, his impressive performances made scouts from all over the globe sit up and take notice.

Reports suggested that plenty of English clubs were eager to lure him to the Premier League.

Instead, he sealed a jaw-dropping £113million move to Atletico Madrid following Antoine Griezmann's move to Barcelona and has scored two goals in six appearances under Diego Simeone so far.

Felix's former coach at Benfica, Renato Paiva, has revealed he advised the 19-year-old to join Manchester City.

Asked whether he advised the youngster on who to sign for, he told The Sportsman: "Yes. I said Manchester City or Barcelona.

"I said City because of Pep Guardiola, or Barcelona because of the way they play."

Paiva believes that Felix would have thrived under the tutelage of Guardiola, rather than the more defensive-minded Simeone.

He added: "I think the characteristics of Joao are better in that kind of game.

"I respect... for God’s sake, I respect Atletico Madrid a lot.

"But the idea of City I think was better for Joao, especially with Pep."
