Former Manchester City left-back Michael Ball has been impressed with Joao Cancelo 's transition to the position this season.
Ball, who made 48 appearances at the position between 2007-09, has watched the Portuguese defender's progression closely after failing to be overly impressed with his early performances following his £35 million move from Juventus in 2019.
Cancelo has previously played at left-back for City, but had looked much more comfortable at his traditional position at right-back.
With Benjamin Mendy now out of the picture due to his ongoing court case, Cancelo could likely feature in the role for the rest of the season.
And if he does so, Ball says he has all the confidence in the world in the 27-year-old.
Speaking to BETDAQ, Ball said: "I think Cancelo has done well at left-back. A couple of years ago he was really struggling to get game time and to adapt to English football and went under the radar a little bit.
"But last season he just came into his own playing right-back. He helped the team out a lot in that position. He was creating a lot of goals, getting forward a lot. He seemed to be everywhere, which just shows the quality he’s got.
"Now he’s been asked to play on the left side and he’s not just doing a job but he’s also still getting involved for the team and going forward and getting into the midfield areas to make that extra man, which is how Pep likes to play.
"He likes them to pop into midfield to help keep possession. So it just shows the talent Cancelo has got. But you’d hope Cancelo at left-back is just short-term, because going forward against the big boys you really want key players in your key positions to make the difference from being nearly men to winning the Champions League."
Cancelo will face as tough of a task this weekend when he'll likely come up against Mo Salah when City travel to Anfield to take on Liverpool.
City come into the game one point behind Liverpool with the two sitting in the top positions in the league.
