Joanne Wood to make US return against Priscila Cachoeira at UFC 291

Joanne Wood will head back to America for her next fight when she takes on Priscila Cachoeira at UFC 291.

Wood, 37, broke a two-fight losing skid in March when she won a split decision against Luana Carolina on the undercard of Leon Edwards' trilogy fight against Kamaru Usman in London. 'JoJo' looks to pick up her second win on the bounce when she faces Cahoceira, 34, on July 29 at the Vivint Arena in Salt Lake City, Utah.

Cachoeira won consecutive fights against Ariane Lipski and Kim Ji-yeon last year as the Brazilian is likely just a win away from securing a top-15 ranking at women's flyweight. 'Zombie Girl' faced heavy scrutiny after her December 2021 fight against Gillian Robertson as she appeared to gouge the eyes of her opponent whilst being tapped out, an accusation she later denied.

Wood revealed her UFC contract was nearing an end before her recent win against Carolina. It's unclear if the Scottish flyweight has signed a new deal with the promotion, or her upcoming bout against Cachoeira will be her last. Wood, who has fought in the UFC since 2014, admitted that she has pondered retirement after competing in combat sports for almost two decades.

"I love it here, I feel like the UFC is my home and I would love to get another contract. If not I will fight my fight and then maybe put the gloves down, but I feel like now that I'm healthy I don't really want to put them down right now. I feel great because I don't have any injuries," she said.

"The last time I was really active it was great but I was fighting with injuries each time and it wasn't going in my favour. I realised it was only good being active if the results were going your way, so I had to take some time off because of the injuries and I just needed that break."

UFC 291 will be headlined by a vacant 'BMF' title fight between top lightweights Dustin Poirier and Justin Gaethje. Former champions Jan Blachowicz and Alex Pereira meet in the co-main event whilst the star-stacked pay-per-view also features the likes of Paulo Costa, Derrick Lewis and Tony Ferguson.
