After the success of her fourth studio album, Divers, American songwriter and harpist Joanna Newsom will perform in Australia for the first time in five years.
She made the harp hip, but it hasn’t always been that way. She first asked her parents if she could learn to play the harp when she was five years old, and was told she had to learn piano first.
Now she’s plays a range of instruments and her music spans indie folk and medieval harp to pop, jazz and avant-garde. Newsom defies categorisation, with some songs lasting up to 17 minutes, with deeply complex lyrics. With bloggers now annotating her work, Newsom has admitted that fans expect the obfuscation .
