Joanna Lumley urges Scots to ditch single use plastic bottles in favour of tap water

Joanna Lumley is urging Scots to ditch single-use plastic bottles in favour of tap water.

The Absolutely Fabulous star teamed up with former Blue Peter presenter Gethin Jones in a campaign to persuade Scots to help reduce the amount of plastic going to landfill sites.

Shock figures show that 75 per cent of us still buy bottled water and most say they are not planning to change.

New research revealed that four out of five Scots want to see laws brought in to tackle plastic waste.

And 57 per cent of the public are aware that most single-use plastic bottles end up on landfill sites.

Lumley said: “There is no reason people should be needlessly spending cash on bottled water when they could be opting for great-tasting, healthy tap water.

“I want to urge everyone to do their bit to make small changes that make a big difference. Not only will it reap huge benefits for the planet but it will cost a lot less, too.”

More than 7.7billion bottles of water are consumed yearly in the UK and over 55 per cent of bottled water drinkers buy it for the home.

Despite huge public awareness of the plastic problem, more than a quarter of Scots are not planning to change their single-use habits.

A third of Scots say manufacturers should drive the change while 23 per cent say the responsibility sits with the Government.

However, 13 per cent admit they don’t care enough about the climate crisis to change.

Lumley and Jones are championing water filters for taps produced by German manufacturers Brita.

A third of consumers buy bottled water because “it tastes better than tap”, said the research.

Yet, 26 per cent of Scots haven’t tried the more eco and purse-friendly alternative – filtered tap water.

When asked why they weren’t reducing their single-use plastics habits further, 44 per cent blamed a lack of alternatives.
