Joanna Cherry MP criticised by Edinburgh party member over apparent support for Alex Salmond

The Edinburgh South West MP Joanna Cherry is facing fresh criticism from within her own party over her support of Alex Salmond.

It follows a pointed tweet over the weekend from a fellow SNP MP which appeared to reference Cherry's support of Salmond.

Alex Salmond was acquitted of all charges following a trial at Edinburgh High Court, but Cherry was viewed as privately supportive of him throughout.

Her chief of staff also provided 'media support' to Salmond throughout the trial, though Joanna Cherry said this was done in a personal capacity in the aide's own time.

Fellow MP Kenny MacAskill has been critical of the prosecution following the trial, saying actions of the Crown Office look like an “abuse of power”.

A jury found the former SNP leader not guilty on 12 of the sexual assault charges facing him, while another was found not proven.

Following the verdict, a number of people loyal to Salmond have suggested online the accusation were part of a conspiracy.

Those who made the allegations have also faced criticism for their motivation behind reporting the crimes.

Following the tweet by her MP colleague, an SNP party source in Edinburgh further criticised Cherry for her lack of condemnation over some attempts on social media to identify and vilify those who had complained.

Asking not to be identified because over fears about a backlash online, they said: “[Hannah Bardell's] tweet speaks for itself and we all know who it is about."

"Worst off all is that since the trial we’ve seen those who made the allegations vilified by some, as well as attempts to identify them, and [Ms Cherry] has never used her influence to condemn that," they added.

Ms Cherry did not respond to a request for comment.
