Joanna Cherry calls for sackings in attack on SNP ruling body

An SNP MP attacked the party's ruling body in a row over personal vendettas in candidate selection.

Joanna Cherry said some of the National Executive Committee should be sacked at a vote during the SNP's annual conference next month.

Cherry was caught up in a bitter tussle for selection in Edinburgh before abandoning a plan to stand for Holyrood next May.

Today she claimed unnamed SEC figures of undermining her at last year's UK election and tried to get her deselected.

"During the General Election campaign briefing against me from NEC sources continued," she told the National newspaper.

"This was upsetting not just for me but also for the SNP activists who were working hard in winter weather to have me re-elected as an SNP MP rather than sitting at home briefing unionist newspapers against SNP candidates."

Cherry, MP for Edinburgh West, said delegates should consider replacing people on the NEC.

"I would hope they would consider replacing those who are bringing the party into disrepute by using their positions on the NEC to conduct personal vendettas or to clear the field of competition for their own candidacy bids or those of their friends," she said.

"What we need on our NEC are members whose only priorities are the furtherance of the cause of independence, our country, its people and the party."

The SNP have been approached for comment.
