Joachim Low to step down as Germany manager but Jurgen Klopp reaffirms Liverpool commitment

Long-serving Germany manager Joachim Low will step down after this summer's European Championships.

Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp had been linked with the post, but is not expected to depart Anfield this summer, even though Low's exit has now been confirmed.

Low took the reins at Germany after the 2006 World Cup, succeeding Jurgen Klinsmann, and let them to the final of Euro 2008.

They finished third in South Africa in 2010 and made the semi-finals at Euro 2012, before Low's finest hour came in the 2014 World Cup in Brazil.

The rampant Germans famously sent the hosts packing 7-1 in the semi-finals, before getting the better of Argentina to be crowned World Champions for the first time since 1990.

They had a disastrous showing in Russia in 2018, however, failing to make it beyond the group phase after defeats to South Korea and Mexico. Speculation over Low's future has been rife ever since, and the German FA confirmed on Tuesday that he is to step aside.

But he will get one final shot at glory at this summer's Euros.

Klopp has long been touted as a potential successor to Low, particularly now that his position at Liverpool is coming into question after a series of bad results.

But The Times reported on Monday that he is to remain at Anfield whatever happens.

Rangers boss Steven Gerrard continues to be mentioned with an emotional return to Liverpool but the Ibrox boss is adamant he's in Glasgow for the long haul.
