Joachim Low delivers six-word verdict on Timo Werner's horror miss for Germany

Timo Werner's tough time in front of goal continued on Wednesday night with an absolute horror miss for Germany in their 2-1 defeat to North Macedonia in a World Cup qualifier.

The loss against the 65th-ranked team in the world leaves Germany in third place after three games - an upset the nobody saw coming. It was their first defeat in a World Cup qualifier for 20 years, stretching 35 games back to their 5-1 defeat at the hands of England in 2001.

Goran Pandev put the visitors ahead in Duisburg just before half-time, but the scores were level 20 minutes after the break thanks to a penalty from Manchester City midfielder Ilkay Gundogan.

The game was finely poised with Chelsea striker Timo Werner coming off the bench, and he had a golden opportunity to make it 2-1 to the 2014 World Cup winners.

After Gundogan broke into the area, he squared the ball to Werner with just the goalkeeper to beat eight yards from goal.

But Werner could not get his feet right and scuffed the shot wide of goal - a terrible miss from the former RB Leipzig star.

Five minutes from time, Eljif Emas scored to produce one of the biggest shocks in recent memory in international football, with North Macedonia holding on to defeat Germany.

When asked about the miss after the game, Germany coach Joachim Low - who has already announced he will be leaving his job after this summer's Euros - had a short response.

"Timo normally has to do that," was Low's brief assessment of the miss.

It's been a tough year for Werner since sealing his move to Stamford Bridge, with just five Premier League goals to his name this season and a further three in the Champions League.

It has not yet worked out for the 25-year-old, and Chelsea fans will have been hoping that a short break on international duty would help boost his confidence levels ahead of an important run of fixtures.

They will now be left hoping that the crucial miss against North Macedonia does not further impact his displays at Stamford Bridge.
