Jo Swinson says she will stop Lib Dems singing 'Tony Blair Can F*** off and Die'

Steps are being taken to stop Lib Dem activists singing “ Tony Blair Can F*** Off And Die” at the Party’s annual conference singalong, Jo Swinson said today.

The party leader has been urging Boris Johnson to moderate his language, accusing him of “abusive” rhetoric and not taking threats of violence against MPs seriously.

But during an interview with BBC Radio 4’s Today Programme, it was noted that activists frequently sing bawdy and aggressive songs at the party’s infamous Glee Club.

One such ode, sung to the tune of Don Maclean’s American Pie at the beer-soaked sing-song, sees activists delight in telling Tony Blair to “F*** Off And Die.”

Ms Swinson said the song is “unacceptable.”

She told the BBC: “It's certainly unacceptable and it's something which actually the people involved in the running of that event have certainly taken steps to deal with.

“Because it is an anachronism and it's not something which is acceptable in any way.”

The Glee Club is run by Liberator, a fiercely independent Lib Dem magazine.

Over the years Glee Club has attracted heavy criticism for the content of its songs.

One regularly performed song pokes fun at late former Lib Dem leader Charles Kennedy’s alcoholism - though Liberator insist it is sung with his family’s blessing.
