Jo Swinson not standing for Holyrood says Scottish Lib Dem leader

A former Lib Dem leader who lost her seat at the general election will not be standing for Holyrood.

Willie Rennie said Jo Swinson, who was dumped by the voters last year, has a new job and has not applied to be a candidate.

Swinson won the party's UK leadership race in July 2019 and claimed she had a shot at being Prime Minister.

She wanted the Lib Dems to hoover up anti-Brexit votes and leapfrog Labour, but in the end her campaign fell flat.

At December's election, her party fell to 11 seats and she lost her own East Dunbartonshire constuency.

Rennie, who has led the Scottish Lib Dems since 2011, tipped Swinson in April for Holyrood:

He said: “I would love to see Jo come to the Scottish Parliament, I think she’s talented.

“I was keen to encourage her to stay involved and for her to consider the Scottish Parliament as one of those options.

“She’s not made her mind up about that but I think she’s talented and would be great to have.

“It’s too early for her to leave the political scene – I hope she does do it.”

However, at a press briefing today, Rennie said she would not be contesting the Holyrood election:

"She's not applied, so she's not standing."

"I don't know if you saw, it was actually maybe a month or so ago, they announced she had a new job.

She was recently unveiled as a visiting professor at Cranfield School of Management.
