A man arrested in connection with the fatal stabbing of Labour MP Jo Cox has been named locally as Tommy Mair.

Footage has emerged of the moment police arrested the man in Birstall, West Yorkshire. It shows two officers restraining a man on the ground, in the middle of a road.

Cox was shot and stabbed at a constituency surgery event outside a library in West Yorkshire at 12.53pm. She was pronounced dead at 1.48pm.

A spokesperson for West Yorkshire police said: “At 12:53 today, police were called to a report of an incident on Market Street, Birstall, where a woman in her 40s had suffered serious injuries. A man in his late 40s to early 50s nearby also suffered slight injuries.

“Armed officers attended and a 52-year-old man was arrested in the area. There are no further details at present."

Police have not yet confirmed the name of the man arrested.

Eyewitnesses report that the 41-year-old mother of two was left lying bleeding on the pavement after the attack. She was subsequently airlifted to Leeds General Infirmary.
