JJ Holloman already impressed by UGA freshman quarterback D’Wan Mathis

Shortly after Ohio State began talking with Justin Fields, Kirby Smart was able to flip D’Wan Mathis, a 4-star Buckeyes quarterback commit, to Georgia on early signing day.

Mathis enrolled early at Georgia, leaving Oak Park (Mich) High School after a season in which he completed 110-176 passes with 20 touchdowns. In his three year high school career, Mathis surpassed both 5,000 passing and 2,000 rushing yards.

Though he has not had too much time to showcase his talents yet, he is already impressing his teammates with his strong arm and athletic abilities.

One player who has been impressed by Mathis to this point is the team’s leading returning receiver, JJ Holloman.

Holloman, who is entering his junior season in Athens, is coming off a year in which he caught 24 passes for 418 yards with five touchdowns.

“He’s pretty good, he can run good, he has a great arm, he has good touch on the deep balls and things like that,” Holloman told the AJC, speaking of Mathis. “He’s just learning the offense right now, but once he comes along, he’s going to be a threat.”

Mathis, who is listed at 6-6, 205 pounds, is expected to share equal 2nd string reps with JUCO transfer Stetson Bennett, according to Smart.

“He’s versatile, able to throw on the run. Puts a good touch on it, he can throw the deep ball, everything.”
