NAGPUR: Flamboyant wicketkeeper Jitesh Sharma has rediscovered his mojo in a new role as a middle-order batsman. The way he is exploiting bowling attacks in Syed Mushtaq Ali T20 Trophy has not only brought him good luck but also made Vidarbha a confident side.
The 28-year-old explosive batsman, who used to be an opener earlier, has established himself as a finisher, who can bat longer when required, in a matter of just two months. He gave glimpses of what he can do at No.5 on Monday in front of IPL talent scouts. His cleanly struck 28 not out at a strike rate of 400 against a quality Maharashtra side has put him back in IPL contention.
Around two months ago, the former Mumbai Indians member was asked to bat in the middle-order by Vidarbha think-tank. It turned out to be a blessing in disguise as he is known for his ability to eke out huge hits and finish games. The decision of putting him in the middle has changed the dynamics drastically.
Currently, Jitesh is the only batsman in the tournament who is maintaining a strike rate of over 240 (246 to be precise) so far in the meet. He is the highest run-getter with 202 runs from Vidarbha with two half-centuries. He has provided the cushion Vidarbha was looking for at No.5. The best thing that is working for Sharma in broader perspective is the run-making manner that his batting position requires is always in demand.
"Be it national or IPL scouts, players batting at No.5 to No.8 are most sought after in the shortest format. The big teams want finishers and Jitesh is proving himself day by day. The real test has begun now with all the talent scouts focusing more on the knockouts," said Sulakshan Kulkarni, who mentors Sharma.
Sharma, who made 106 against Himachal in the 2016 T20 edition, landed himself in the IPL scheme of things with a call from Mumbai Indians. After a couple of seasons with the franchise, the IPL spot eluded him. Post the pandemic, Jitesh made transformations in every aspect and is looking matured in his approach.
"IPL franchise people look for experienced pros like Jitesh who have been in the circuit for a longer period. Jitesh has matured well and maintains the strike rate that definitely attracts attention. The new role in batting and his successful adaptation have fetched good results. The transformation is certainly making him a standout," Kulkarni added.
