Jimmy White sends warning to Ronnie O'Sullivan and co ahead of UK Championship

Jimmy White has sent an ominous warning to the rest of the UK Championship and believes he can win the competition.

White, 60, has rolled back the years to qualify for the last 32 of the competition and will take on Ryan Day in York on Saturday night.

This year's competition comes on the 30th anniversary of White's success in the UK when he beat John Parrott in the 1992 final.

Unsurprisingly, the likes of Ronnie O'Sullivan, Judd Trump and Neil Robertson are the favourites to claim victory over the next week while White is the outsider, with some bookmakers pricing him at 750/1 to lift the trophy.

But The Whirlwind, who is the oldest qualifier for 29 years, told Eurosport . “I can do some damage I'm not concerned about who I play. If I play my A-game, I can win the competition, no doubt about it.”

White, who admits he has found consistency in his game, added: "I’ve been working on some techniques, which is too technical to explain, but it’s been working!

“I wouldn't play the game if I couldn’t win. I know I can win. When you get to my age, realistically, you're not that consistent.

“But I’m pretty positive because my game is in good shape. Your game has got to be sharp or else you look silly."

White added: "My game is in good condition, I'm working on the mental side. When you get to my age, I can be playing snooker and part of my brain says, ‘Did you water the plants before you left home?’ The other part says ‘That’s irrelevant’.

“You’re also having conversations with yourself because as you get older, you get a bit more conservative and you weigh up all the situations."

Elsewhere in the first round, O'Sullivan takes on world No.6 Matthew Stevens, while Trump comes up against Xiao Guodong of China.

The first round matches get underway with first seed Zhao Xintong vs Sam Craigie and Mark Allen's match with Jordan Brown on Saturday.
