Jimmy Moreland continues to steal the shine at Redskins OTAs

The media landscape is looking at the Washington Redskins OTA sessions and focusing on the quarterback position. They’ve all got it wrong — cornerback is where all of the action is at.

Jimmy Moreland, a 7th-round pick in this years’ draft, has undoubtedly been the breakout star for the Redskins so far this offseason, showing his agility and playmaking ability on defense in OTAs. He has even received a new nickname: “The People’s Corner.”

On Wednesday afternoon, Moreland corralled a hattrick of interceptions, the last of which was a walk-off pick-six to end the training period. Though he has a small stature — just 5’10” and 180 pounds — his nose for the ball has proven to be invaluable as of yet.

“He’s got great ball skills and he’s got a great confidence about him,” Gruden said, via Redskins.com. “I love the energy that he brings. He’s a great competitor, and I think when the pads do come on for real, I think he’ll be right there in the mix with everybody.”

Being overlooked is nothing new for Moreland. After getting passed up by several major schools, he made a name for himself at James Madison and set the school’s interceptions record with 18 in his career. Should the attention at Washington practices continue to surround Dwayne Haskins and the offense, then you can bet that Moreland will be lurking in the secondary, waiting to steal the shine.
