Over the last weekend, Jimmy Kimmel Live was cancelled indefinitely by ABC over Kimmel’s comments about the shooting of conservative political activist and podcaster Charlie Kirk. However, on Tuesday, September 23, 2025, following a brief suspension, the show was resumed.
During a monologue on the first day of his comeback, Jimmy Kimmel addressed the situation that had led to the cancellation of his show. He also expressed gratitude towards the people who had rallied behind him and supported him during this tough time. Poking fun at his situation, Kimmel remarked that Disney had given him one condition he needs to adhere to remain on air and that he had agreed. Taking out a piece of paper, from his pocket, Kimmel said:
“Here we go: To reactivate your Disney+ and Hulu account, open the Disney+ app on your smart TV or TV-connected device.”
Kimmel made these comments as a nod to several people who had cancelled their Disney+ subscriptions after his show was taken off air.
He continued his monologue by admitting that he is one of the “fortunate” ones to have been doing what he does with ABC for approximately 23 years. He also acknowledged the network’s risk-taking nature, which has allowed him to bend the rules of late-night talk shows even when it made them “uncomfortable”.
“Every night, they’ve defended my right to poke fun at our leaders and to advocate for subjects that I think are important by allowing me to use their platform. And I am very grateful for that”
That said, he also expressed unhappiness towards his show’s cancellation last week. He spoke about the difficult conversations he had with the network people following the incident. He also mentioned of the risk that Disney was taking with him this time. He said:
“This is a giant company. We have short attention spans and I am a tiny part of the Disney corporation. They welcomed me back on the air and I thank them for that because I know that unfortunately, and I think unjustly, this puts them at risk.”
