Jimmy Greaves receiving support from rock legend Phil Collins amid health issues

Tottenham and England legend Jimmy Greaves has reportedly been supported in his battle against illness by rockstar Phil Collins.

Greaves, who suffered a stroke five years ago and has been unable to walk and talk since, was admitted to hospital on Tuesday for an unspecified illness, but has not tested positive for coronavirus or suffered another stroke.

Collins - who is best known as the drummer/singer of Genesis - is said to have idolised Greaves as a child, and has been secretly supporting the 80-year-old by privately donating money.

As reported by the Daily Star, Greaves' agent Terry Baker said: "Phil Collins phones me regularly to see how Jimmy is and made a substantial donation.

"We have had thousands of people enquiring after Jimmy and sending love.

"We thank you for that from the bottom of our hearts. It's still a case of no news is good news at the moment.

"Jimmy isn't a well man but he is in hospital receiving the best possible care thanks to the amazing doctors and nurses of the NHS at this difficult time for everyone."

Greaves, who also played for Chelsea, West Ham and AC Milan, is Spurs' all-time top scorer with 266 goals, while he also netted 44 times in 57 games for England.

Having started all three of England's group games in the home World Cup finals, he suffered heartbreak when he lost his place through injury to Geoff Hurst, who would famously go on to score a hat-trick in the final.

After his football career Greaves became a pundit, and later presented a popular Saturday lunchtime programmed called Saint and Greavsie along with fellow former player Ian St John.

A statement from Tottenham's website added: "Jimmy’s family has asked us to pass on their thanks for all the well wishes and positive messages."
