James 'Jimmy' Gracey, a student from Illinois, went missing on Tuesday, 17 March in Spain. After days of searching, his body was found in waters off a Barcelona beach, with the cause of death still being determined.
The last time Gracey was seen was outside the Shoko nightclub in Barcelona with his friends. However, at around 3:00 a.m. on Tuesday, the 20-year-old separated from his group and did not return to their rented accommodation, the Associated Press reported.
'That was the last time we've heard from him,' Cavin McLay, Gracey's fraternity brother told WBMA.
Concern grew about his whereabouts. Gracey's friends reported him missing after the 20-year-old did not return to their accommodation. The situation escalated after Catalan police informed them that they had recovered Jimmy's stolen phone.
Worst Fears Confirmed After Police Search
With the situation yielding little progress, Spanish authorities conducted searches for the missing Illinois student along the seaside neighbourhood, particularly areas near the club where he was last spotted, CNN reported.
Police also reviewed CCTV footage in an effort to retrace the movements of Gracey on Tuesday. Jimmy's friends also returned to the club to gather additional information. They also handed out missing person flyers, hoping to get any information or leads on the whereabouts of Gracey.
The lifeless body of Gracey was eventually found a few metres underwater off Somorrostro Beach. Police indicated it may have been an accident and that there were no immediate signs of criminal involvement. However, this remains inconclusive as authorities await the results of an autopsy being done on Gracey's body.
According to the Catalan high court, initial findings are expected in two to three days. However, the final autopsy report, which includes laboratory testing, could take weeks.
Missing Pieces Behind Gracey's Death
With Catalan police awaiting the results of Jimmy Gracey's autopsy, there are several questions left unanswered. There were some simple details left out, including the condition of the Illinois student before he separated from his friends and went missing.
It was not mentioned if he had too much to drink at the time. Further, it was also not mentioned why Jimmy separated from the group and wandered off on his own.
But considering Jimmy was able to separate from his friends without company, it was likely that he was not intoxicated at the time. There is no telling how far or which part of the beach he went to. A plausible theory is that he could have been swept away by water and was unable to return to dry land.
So far, any assault or foul play seems unlikely since there were no reports of bruising or signs of bodily harm. Given the personality of Jimmy, he didn't seem to be the kind of person who would get into trouble.
Gracey's family described Jimmy as kind, responsible, and a devoted son and brother. One of his friends even shared how Jimmy was the kind of person who would go out of his way to be there when someone needed it.
Unless shocking findings come up from his autopsy, Jimmy Gracey's death appears to be accidental. It is unfortunate, especially for a person who appears to be well-loved wherever he went.
