Jimmy Goodfellow dies: Cardiff City icon passes away aged 76

Cardiff City icon Jimmy Goodfellow has sadly passed away at the age of 76, the club has confirmed.

The Bluebirds stalwart, who first joined the club in 1982, held virtually every backroom position, including chairman - for one Football League meeting - manager, trainer, coach, first-team physio and youth physio.

Sunderland-born Goodfellow joined Newport County to assist Len Ashurst as manager in 1981, but the pair both moved to Ninian Park the following year.

Upon Ashurst's dismissal in 1984, Goodfellow was named caretaker manager before taking the role on a full-time basis at the start of the ill-fated 1984-85 season, in which the club lost eight of its first nine games.

He was relieved of his duties and subsequently moved to Plymouth Argyle to take up a role as physiotherapist before moving back to his hometown club, Sunderland, for a short stint as Lawrie McMenemy's assistant.

But it wasn't long before he was back at his beloved Ninian Park, when Frank Burrows invited him back to become the club's physiotherapist in 1986.

He was part of the staff when Eddie May's side won the Third Division in 1993 and stayed at the club until the end of that decade.

In 1998, he was given a testimonial by Cardiff City against Manchester United at Ninian Park. Then 55, the crowd erupted when Goodfellow came on for the final few minutes of the match.

The club said in a statement: "The thoughts of all of us at the club are with Jimmy and his family at this terribly difficult time.

"Forever a Bluebird, may he rest in peace."
