Jimmy Garoppolo unlikely to play Sunday vs. Seattle

The 49ers aren’t likely to have their starting quarterback under center in Seattle on Sunday for the 2020 season finale according to head coach Kyle Shanahan.

There was some optimism that Garoppolo might return from the high ankle sprain he suffered in Week 8 when the 49ers opened his practice window prior to Week 16. Shanahan on Monday told reporters in a video conference that the quarterback’s activation off Injured Reserve is unlikely though.

“I know we planned on the same plan this week. I would be shocked if it’s changed,” Shanahan said when asked if Garoppolo would suit up for Week 17. “If it has, then we’ll give him the chance. But according to last week it’s not gonna change.”

Garoppolo practiced leading up to the 49ers’ Week 16 matchup, but didn’t play while he recovers from the second of two high ankle sprains he sustained this season. The first came in Week 2 against the Jets. He returned in Week 5 and played until injuring his ankle again in Week 8 against Seattle.

CJ Beathard will get the start with Josh Rosen working as his backup.

In six starts this season Garoppolo completed 67.1 percent of his throws for 1,096 yards with seven touchdowns and five interceptions.
